The overall goal of this project is to ensure that Flemish hop growers are no longer dependent on foreign hop varieties, but have their own new hop varieties that are more disease tolerant, have better aromas for the breweries and are more resistant to the changing climate conditions. In this way, the hop growers will be able to grow hops in a more sustainable way and to have an increased sales at the Belgian breweries. Within this project, the different steps of the breeding program will be optimized and the existing hop selections will be characterized. The aim is that quite soon after the project one or more new hop varieties can be introduced at the hopfarms and are ready to be grown commercially. The goal is also to continue the breeding program after the project.
