Growing future proof raspberries in Belgium: ready for the future?
In recent years, we have seen more and more changes in our climate. Mild winters lead to earlier sprouting of raspberries. We are often surprised by a period of frost later in spring. In the summer, on the other hand, we encounter long periods of high temperatures > 30°C. The current raspberry varieties are confronted with these extremes. In this project, we searched for an organic summer raspberry variety that is best/better resistant to extreme heat and late night frost. In general, it can be concluded that Tulameen remains the reference variety due to its high production, high percentage of class 1 fruits, delicious taste, good texture and, in addition, good resistance to cold and heat. Based on the results of the cold simulation, the Northern Italian variety ‘so.lu.12.38.01’ is an interesting variety and in terms of production, Cascade Gem stands out. This variety is very vigorous but is sensitive to cold stress. Repetition of the tests is necessary to confirm these results.
