Poultrynsect: The use of live insect larvae to improve sustainability and animal welfare of organic chickens production
The Poultrynsect project explores using black soldier fly larvae as feed for organic chickens to enhance sustainability and meat quality. By rearing larvae on organic food side streams, it promotes circular economy principles. Research findings suggest larvae supplementation improves chicken welfare and may boost immune organ activity without compromising growth. Consumer acceptance varies across countries, with Italians and Germans more open to insect-fed poultry. Understanding these differences is crucial for market adoption. Overall, the project underscores the potential of insect-based feeds to improve poultry production sustainability and meet consumer demand for natural meat products.
