The main objective of this project was to find efficient, cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to chemical soil disinfestation. These alternatives aim at reducing the population of soil pathogens in order to assure the profitability of the soil-bound cultivation of lettuce, lamb's lettuce and chicory in the coming years. Both physico-chemical and microbial techniques were investigated. An additional goal was to maintain the situation of controlled soil pathogens after soil disinfestation by introducing and stimulating beneficial soil micro-organisms (or BCAs).​
