The potential of insect meal and whey protein as alternative protein sources for organic laying hen feed
The project explored the potential of insect meal and whey protein as alternative protein sources for organic laying hen feed. Two test feeds were formulated (by ILVO and Bio’Or respectively) and tested at the Experimental Poultry Centre and, for the whey protein trial, also at a certified organic pilot farm. Observed differences between control and test groups suggest potential effects (e.g. differences in feed consumption, laying percentage, and yolk colour in the insect meal trial), yet further larger-scale studies are warranted to draw robust conclusions. However, current regulatory constraints hinder the practical implementation of insect meal in organic layer feed. The future use of these protein sources requires careful consideration on multiple fronts, including regulatory requirements, economic considerations, logistical challenges, and optimal concentrations of the ingredients. Nevertheless, both insect meal and whey protein results in a significant additional cost compared to traditional ingredients such as soy. Future initiatives should focus on refining application strategies and addressing various challenges to enable their deployment in commercial organic laying hen farms.
